I hoped to create an eclectic selection so there is something for everyone. Like most of my read-alike book lists, I'm not trying to find books exactly like The Hunger Games–that would be boring! I chose books with a focus on survival stories, epic contests ( physical or mental), science fiction and, of course, some dystopia. Consequently I decided to focus this list of books for kids who like The Hunger Games on the upper middle grades, so about half of the books are 6th grade and above, the rest for grade 8/9 and up ( which I have marked as such).

I think it is better suited for readers 12 and older. Most recommendations lists for books like The Hunger Games focus on Young Adult (YA) literature, but I have noticed that most middle schoolers I know have read the series. However, I thought the gory details skewed it older. The story is marketed to a middle grade (preteen, early teen) audience, as the characters and content match well with this group. It would be nice to see more involvement of female cast members (not including Christopher ’s friend pigeon, Bridget). In being more historically accurate, the story is heavily male-centric. Although he was brilliant in many different aspects, he still demonstrates curiosity and a sense of adventure.

Readers will love to follow along and try solving some of the puzzles (provided with enough detail for you to attempt).Ĭhristopher is humorous and intelligent in a clear-headed, realistic way His personality and actions were also true to his age. No time is wasted on following false leads or mistaken clues, which keeps the story moving at an excellent pace. I love the depth and accuracy of historical detail blended into the story, while maintaining an easier reading level. The atmosphere and setting of old London is rustic, medieval, and portrayed with vivid imagery. Christopher is learning just how dangerous they can be. In 1600s, the streets of London were perilous. all the while dodging conspiracies and other untrustworthy characters. Working with his friend Tom, they follow the evidence, decipher the puzzles, and work to decode the clues.

But when other apothecaries throughout London are struck by a vicious murderer, he knows it's only time before his master’s store becomes a target.
